COFFEE CORNER – The calendar pages keep turning, and it’s time for the March Coffee Corner this Friday morning outside of the School Office from 7:45-8:30 a.m.  Thank you to Kyle Meades, owner of Therapy Group of Tucson, for sponsoring this month’s event.  Stop by for a cup of coffee!

LOVE of READING WEEK

March 6 through March 10 is Love of Reading Week!   This year’s theme is “It’s a Small World.”  Reading opens up doors to other worlds, whether it be other countries, cultures, or fantasy worlds.   As with the Disneyland ride, we want to celebrate and show respect for and kindness toward all cultures and backgrounds.

We have a lot of fun-filled activities planned for the week, including:

Classroom Door Decorating Contest:  Each class may decorate its classroom door in furtherance of the theme “It’s A Small World.”  Decorations must be completed by Friday, March 10.  Entries will be judged on Friday, and the top three winners will receive Eegees for the whole class.

Used Book Drive:  Donate your gently used books to benefit the Angel Heart Pajama Project, a 501©(3) non-profit organization that provides new pajamas and books to children in need, those who are homeless, or are in foster care or shelters.  Look for donation boxes around campus.

Author Presentations:  Authors and illustrators from our community will be on campus throughout the week to talk about the process of writing and illustrating books.  Additional information regarding the presenting authors and how to purchase their books will be available in next week’s Eagle Express.

Read a Story:  Parents, grandparents, caregivers, and friends who are interested in reading a story to their child’s classroom may contact the teacher directly to arrange a time to read during the week.

Pajama and Cookie Friday (grades K-3):  What could be a better end to a fun-filled week than getting to wear your pajamas to school on Friday and eating cookies while listening to a story!

If you have any questions, please contact the Love of Reading Week Chair, Sherry Downer, at (520) 275-1877 or sherry@sherrydownerlaw.com.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
Come join the fun at the Happy Camper Book Fair!  The fair runs from Wednesday, March 8, to Friday, March 10. We will be open each day at 7:30 a.m., closing Wednesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. and Friday at 4 p.m.  We will have a few different raffles and giveaways. Hope you can join us. S’more fun with books!  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Susie at susiehuerta@aol.com
BOX TOPS
Thank you all for collecting Box Tops, especially since it is free money for the school. The winning class for the Lower School was the second grade, and the winner for the Upper School was the fifth grade. They both received a frozen treat.  The top three collectors were Colton Rebert (first), Isabel Rebert (second), and Scarlett Street (third). They received Target gift cards. A special thank-you to all who helped me with collecting the Box Tops and counting some of them: Julia Rebert and Susie Huerta, as well as Breanne Tirrito for kicking it off.
Thank you!

Hooray! Friday morning might have a slight chill in the air and a feeling of fall.  Stop by SMA’s monthly Coffee Corner and touch base with some fellow parents.  It’s a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and hopefully meet someone new to our St. Michael’s community.  Thank you to Terry and Holly von Guilleaume and DSA Vacations for hosting this month’s Coffee Corner.  We hope to see you in front of the School Office Friday morning!
With everyone’s help, we earned $586 through Box Tops for St. Michael’s.  Hats off to Ana Marin for her time and dedication leading this effort again this year.  Keep on clipping as we’ll be collecting Box Tops in the spring, too.  Thank you!

Thank You!  A special thank-you goes out to Sandy and Tom Clark and Bison Witches for coordinating a grab-‘n-go lunch for our teachers last Wednesday.  While the kids all departed at noon, the faculty stayed for meetings, and SMA provided a lunch to show some love to our wonderful teachers.  Lunch is not complete without something sweet, and we’d like to thank our Back-Up Bakers–Julie Pendolino, Julie Zaetta, Michelle Slavin, Carly Flagg, Kristin Salkowski, and Heather Walsh–for baking deserts for our great teachers.

Holiday Greens: The holidays are still a couple of months away, but our annual Holiday Greens fundraiser is currently underway. Final orders are due in the office by November 1. Get a great wreath for yourself (or a loved one or a neighbor or a colleague) and support our school at the same time. Please contact Brigitte Townsdin or Amanda Kukla with any questions.
Box Tops:  This is the final week for Box Tops; please check for expiration dates since expired Box Tops don’t count. We also no longer take Labels for Education from Campbell’s since their program just finished. Results will be given on Monday, October 24. Winning grade get a frozen treat, and the top three students who have collected the most Box Tops will get a surprise gift card from a location to be announced on Monday.

Box Tops Grand Prix:  Thank you to everyone who has been bringing in those little squares!  The Grand Prix is on its way.  The last day to submit box tops is next Friday, October 21.  Please make sure to check expirations dates.  Thank you!
The kids would love to see you on the playground!  And ensuring everyone’s safety is a priority.  If you have flexibility in your Monday or Tuesday schedule, we are still looking for some parents to help out during the 11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. shift.   Interacting with our fun students is a refreshing way to spend some time! We appreciate all of the wonderful parents helping on the playground every day of the week.  If you can help, please contact Alisa Reed at alisareedesq@yahoo.com.

The Box Top Grand Prix

box-topThe Box Top Grand Prix has started this week. It will continue through October 21st with final results being announced on October 24th.  There will be an announcement at the midway point on October 10th. Box Tops has partnered with Walmart, and when you get the bonus ones it will allow us to have an extra entry for our school at a chance to win $5,000. We are also going to make it a little easier this year by having you put your Box Tops in a small baggy with your child’s name and quantity of Box Tops inside the bag.  If you have more than 50, we would greatly appreciate it if you could sort them into groups of 50. At the end of the Box Top Grand Prix, the top three students who brought the most Box Tops in will get a prize.  The top grades in the Lower and Upper Schools will win a frozen treat.  Thank you for all your help.

SMA News

As the school year draws to a close, the SMA would like to update our St. Michael’s families on the “free money” earnings. The total gained from Box Tops alone was $860! Hold on to your remaining box tops and continue collections for our fall Box Top rally once school is back in session.

The SMA would like to extend an enormous thank-you to Laura Lee and Claire Zeiller for their efforts in guaranteeing flowers were available for all the St. Michael’s performers in both the K-3 and 4-8 Fine Arts Night shows. The flowers were lovely, and the process for ordering and picking up was smooth; both were greatly appreciated!

Our last big event of the school year, Art Expo, is this Friday night! Any and all free hands are needed and welcome to help display art throughout our campus.  This event is such a wonderful culmination of the students’ year in art. Please step in for any amount of time during the school day on Friday, if you are available.

Thank you all for your support and generosity during this school year. The SMA could not be what it is without parental support; we are so grateful for those in our St. Michael’s family! We are already thinking ahead to next fall and hope you will consider joining us in the planning and preparation of events for the 2016-17 school year. Have a blessed and relaxing summer!

Thank you to all the students and teachers who participated in the annual St. Michael’s Spell-a-Thon this past Monday, February 15th. Look for your students’ tests to be returned in their Eagle Express this Wednesday. Note: if your child received a 90 percent correct or higher AND/OR $20 in pledges they will be awarded a Free Dress coupon to be used on a day of his or her choosing (see last week’s Eagle Blog for a complete list of prizes).

In addition the SMA would like to thank the following Spell-a-Thon volunteers: Ann Wilds, Sarah Nordstrom, Gabi Johnson, Gladys Tom, Hyewon Shin, Sonja Romanoski, Chris Lewis, Laura Lee, Kristin Greenwood, Alisa Reed, and Chris Strong.  Please know your help in administering and grading the tests was truly appreciated! You can use your Rodeo Break as a time to continue pledge collection. Pledge sheets and collected donations must be submitted by March 4th to be eligible for prizes based on pledges received.

Our St. Michael’s students and faculty celebrated Mardi Gras last Tuesday at the annual Pancake Lunch sponsored by the SMA. A highlight of this event is always the music provided by a steel drum band. Thank you to “Jovert” of Tucson High School for getting our students on their feet, dancing in true New Orleans style!

The SMA would also like to extend our sincerest gratitude to our Dual Dad Event Chairs: Treber Rebert and Jason Gastrock, as well as volunteers Sarah Hoover, Sarah Nordstrom, Michael Peyton, Hyewon Shin, Megan Brown, Kerry Byrd, Erik Kramer, Thomas Gimber, and Anita Vancil. This event is a St. Michael’s favorite, and it would not be possible without our gracious helping hands. It would also be impossible to provide a pancake lunch without pancakes. Thank you to Heather Macpherson for purchasing necessary supplies, and to Andy Bruno for once again volunteering his expeditious pancake-flipping skills! It is not a small endeavor to prepare and cook more than 1,100 pancakes. We are so grateful for our volunteers!

We are in our last week of our Boxtop Spring Training. Here’s hoping we knock it out of the park in collections in this final inning! The student winners for last week were Sam M. from 1B and Jason from Coach Beckelman’s class.  The class winners were 1B for the Lower School and Coach Beckelman’s homeroom for the Upper School.  The final boxtop winners will be announced on February 29, and the class with the greatest contributions will be receiving their frozen treats on Friday, March 4. Batter up…

Hello, Box Toppers!  Our Spring Training Contest is underway!  A reminder to submit those box tops, with your student’s and teacher’s name on the back to be eligible for the weekly drawing and cumulative homeroom prize. Let’s make this year the most competitive yet!

A reminder to those with gluten sensitivities or allergies, there will be a limited number of gluten-free pancakes at next Tuesday’s pancake lunch in celebration of Mardi Gras. Please remind your children to request a substitute, if needed.

Once again we are grateful to our Campus Decorating Committee chair, Kerry Byrd, as well as Carol Arnold and Heather Walsh, for sharing the love in anticipation of Valentine’s Day. As always, you have outdone yourselves in their efforts, and we appreciate you all!
