Notes from the Head

Dear St. Michael’s Parents and Families—

I am glad to be back on campus after a brief but very important three-day conference last week in Houston at the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools biennial. It was good to learn more about what makes Episcopal schools so effective, and what common challenges and strengths we share at St. Michael’s within the broader community of SAES schools. One of the more significant take-aways for me from the conference was simply knowing how strong our school has become, and will continue to become, as an SAES member school. To that end, we are in the process of ‘completing’ our self-study this year for re-accreditation with SAES, as many of you already know, and we ask you to reply to our first (and perhaps only) survey to the parent community to be sent this coming week. Thank you.

We also look forward to seeing you, if only briefly, at our SMA Coffee Corner this Friday, from 7:30-8:15 a.m. out in front of the school. Please come by and say hello, meet other parents, and bring your sons and daughters to enter their name in a fun raffle. And of course, there will be plenty of hot coffee to warm us up on a cold morning! I hope to see you there.

Tomorrow, we’ll also celebrate our annual Halloween tradition with the K-4 parade beginning at 2:45 p.m., and following on Friday morning, All Saints Day, with our annual Dia de Los Muertos chapel service at 10:00 a.m. All families are encouraged and welcome to attend both events. For those who are new to the school, the Dia de Los Muertos event in particular is a longstanding St. Michael’s tradition, with lots of color and art and music and prayer. We hope you will join us on Friday!

Lots more to come in these next few weeks leading up to Thanksgiving! For now, please feel free to be in touch at any time to meet or chat. I have appreciated those of you who have taken me up on the invitation to meet. With each conversation, I am learning more and more about what makes St. Michael’s such a special place.

All good wishes; looking forward to seeing you soon,

Brendan Sullivan
